1150 BERNAT CLAVELL
Business man. Arrives in Lérida during the re-population of that area, after Ramón Berenguer IV vanquished the Moors in 1149. Bernat, as many of the re-settlers, comes from Toulouse, France, where their anscestors had relocated, no doubt trying to escape the Moor menace. CEC: In those days Toulouse was governed by the descendents of the Count of Barcelona, who had received the region in inheritance, which faciltated the Catalonian migration to this city.

1157 LORETA CLAVELL | |
Ramón Berenguer IV chose Loreta, a field laborer, to be his son's wet nurse because his wife, Petronila of Aragón, was unable to breast feed the child. Loreta remained in the castle for several years, and in good standing with the king, and later, with his son Alfonso el Casto I whom she helped care for. Her good deeds have defied time: she's still remembered every year in Vilamajor in a festival, a "giganta" figure of Loreta (a huge walking figure controlled by two or more people) is paraded through the streets to celebrate that one of their own served the king so well. She's truly our most memorable family member. | |
